Windows 10 is available with many features to improve productivity and usability. One of these functions is the Cortana search bar, where you can simply enter any configuration, utility or application name and start directly from there.
This is a very useful feature if you need to search for something specific very quickly. However, users continued to report in the online forums that this feature did not work for them and that they could not type in the search box at all.
You can still use third party software, such as Copernic, to search for information on your PC, but that doesn’t solve a major problem with the implementation of Windows.
In this article we look at four methods you can use to solve a typing problem in the search box of your Windows computer.

As mentioned before, there are three methods you can use to solve the problem in the Windows search box: use the Powershell command, restart an alternative user input file, restart Cortana processes and restart Windows Explorer. We have discussed the three methods below; choose the person you need to solve the problem.
Use of Powershell Command
In most cases, you can start a search function by executing the command manually in Windows Powershell.
Step one: Right-click the startup icon and select the Windows Powershell (Admin) option.
Step two: Type (or copy) the following command and press Enter
Get-AppXPackage -AllUsers |for which object {$_.InstallLocation -like *SystemApps*}} | Foreach {Add-AppxPackage -DisableDevelopmentMode -Register $($_.InstallLocation)AppXManifest.xml}.
Now try typing in the search field. That should work. If the problem persists for any reason, return to Powershell as described above and type the following command.
Manifest = (Get-AppxPackage Microsoft.WindowsStore).InstallLocation + ‘AppxManifest.xml’ ; Add-AppxPackage -DisableDevelopmentMode -Register $manifest
When you have finished typing in the Powershell window, press the Enter key and restart the computer. That should solve the problem.

Executing an alternative user input file
Step one: Open Windows Explorer and navigate to the next folder – C:WindowsSystem32.
Step two: Search ctfmon.exe in the catalogue.
Step three: Right-click on the executable file and choose Open from the context menu.
Your research panel should already have been set up; if not, you can also try the two methods below.

Restart of the cortan process
Step one: Right-click on the taskbar and select Task Manager.
Step two: You can find Cortana under the Process tab.
Step three: Right-click on the process and click the Exit Task button.
Step four: Try typing the search field again to restart the Cortana process.

Reboot Windows Explorer
Step one: Launch Managar as above.
Step two: On the ‘Process’ tab, search for the Windows Explorer.
Step three: Select a task and click Restart in the lower right corner.
