The Dell D6000 Universal Dock is an excellent USB-C docking station to extend the versatility of your C-type or USB 3.0 notebook.

PROS

  • Compatible with C and USB 3.0 laptops
  • 65 W power supply for charging the notebook computer
  • Supports up to three 4k displays
  • 11 available ports
  • A sleek and compact design

When you purchase the latest Dell XPS laptop, you quickly realize you have a variety of connectivity options. As the industry continues to adopt thinner, lighter C-type laptops, sacrifices have to be made. While these new laptops are more portable and powerful than ever, they’ve removed the ports you’re likely to need, which means you’ll need a laptop dock to maximize performance. That’s why we’re introducing this revision of the Dell D6000 Universal Dock.

The Dell D6000 Universal Dock is the best USB-C notebook docking station you can buy now. It brings the old ports and more back to your all-new Dell XPS or MacBook Pro, with 11 ports in total. Whether you want to plug in old USB sticks or add multiple monitors to enhance your workflow, the Dell D6000 is the docking station for your laptop.

Why the Dell D6000 Universal Dock?

There are many USB-C docking stations on the market, but the Dell D6000 Universal Dock is the best for several reasons. Not only does it offer more connectivity options for your ultra-portable notebook, but it also has extra features you won’t find at other docks.

This Dell D6000 lives up to its name and supports up to three 4K displays via USB-C and USB-A. So you can easily use this docking station with an old-fashioned notebook with USB 3.0 ports only. When this docking station is connected to a USB-C notebook, it can charge your notebook at the same time, creating a truly universal cable connection.

Dell D6000 Universal Dock Design

The docking station has a simple design that suits most offices and professional environments. It’s black with just dell’s brand on top. The Dell logo is also black with a much darker hue, keeping the entire device clean and unattractive.

The D6000 is designed to be placed horizontally on a desk. This can take up more space on the table than vertical docks. But that’s okay, because this yard is only 6.6 inches long, 3.1 inches wide and 1.2 inches high. It’s also incredibly light, with .84 pounds, if you want to drive it.

One of the disadvantages of this docking station is that it has a USB-C host cable attached to it. If the cable is damaged, you will need to purchase a new docking station.

Let’s talk about the connected cables. One of the reasons why we strongly recommend this docking station is the possibility to connect two 4K displays to the USB 3.0 port. These are three 4k external displays when connected to a USB-C laptop. Few docks can do that.

For this purpose, Dell uses a USB-C host cable with a USB 3.0 adapter connected to the C port type. So you can either connect the docking station to the USB 3.0 port or slide the adapter down to use regular C-type laptops. It’s not the best approach in terms of design, but at least you won’t lose the adapter.

Dell D6000 Universal Dock Connectors

Turn a single USB-C port on your laptop into an impressive 11 ports. The Dell D6000 Universal Dock solves all the problems of the new ultraportable notebooks by providing multiple USB ports and additional video inputs. On the front panel there is a USB-C port, two USB 3.0 ports and an audio jack for the microphone / headphones. There is an LED indicator that lights up white when connected and orange when not connected.

On the back there are two additional USB 3.0 ports, an HDMI 2.0 output, two DisplayPort 1.2 ports, an Ethernet port and a speaker output. A power connection for the 130 W power supply is also included. However, it is surprising that Dell did not record a card reader. If you are a photographer or graphic designer, you will have to do without the SD card or look for other alternatives.

Dell D6000 Universal Performance Dock

And now the performance. Is the Dell D6000 Universal Dock worth the price?

The Dell D6000 Universal Dock is an excellent notebook docking station that lives up to its promise. This docking station uses DisplayLink technology, so you must first download and install the DisplayLink drivers. This is especially necessary when connecting to a USB 3.0 port of a laptop.

The D6000 supports a single 5K (5120 x 2880) display at 60 Hz or up to three 4K displays via USB-C. To achieve a 5K display, two DisplayPort cables must be routed to the monitor. If three 4K displays are connected, one of the displays switches to 30 Hz. Both HDMI and DisplayPort can display 4k at 60Hz on the same screen.

The ability to connect three external 4k monitors to an ultra-portable notebook is a great victory for power users and professionals alike. Not only do you benefit from extreme portability, but you can also transform your workspace with more screen space, dramatically increasing your productivity. The D6000 performs this task with a single cable to your laptop, keeping your desk clean and tidy.

With a power output of 65W, this docking station can charge your laptop at the same time, so you don’t have to worry about power cables.

It gets better. The Dell D6000 Universal Dock is not only suitable for USB-C or Thunderbolt 3 laptops. It works seamlessly with USB 3.0 computers via DisplayLink. Up to two external 4K monitors can be connected via USB 3.0. The reason you don’t have to throw away your old laptop yet.

What I don’t like.

I hate this dock, although I think Dell could have done better in some areas. First of all, a built-in host cable is not the best approach. I don’t know why Dell chose this approach. So you won’t lose your USB-C cable? Maybe. But it is cheaper to replace a lost cable than to replace a docking station.

A final point is the implementation of DisplayLink. Although three 4k screens are a good idea for most people, there are some limitations. DisplayLink relies only on the CPU and iGPU to control multiple displays. So when you’re performing complex tasks like gaming or 3D modeling and displaying, you’re actually drawing power from your processor, putting it under extreme strain, which can lead to problems like smothering, shutting down the laptop or shutting down the game.

So, if you’re buying this dock to enjoy multiple screens, make sure it’s for light work and everyday office use, such as browsing, encoding, spreadsheets and the like, but not for gaming or editing.

Alternatives

The USB-C 4K (Amazon link) triple-display docking station is the best alternative to the Dell D6000. It uses the same DisplayLink technology to control three 4K displays via two DisplayPort and HDMI connections. Although this dock uses a removable USB-C cable, it loses performance. Even with a single monitor, the HDMI connection can only deliver 4 kW at 30 Hz, and you only get 60 W of power compared to 65 W on the D6000.

Do you have to buy it?

You want to add multiple monitors to your laptop

With support for up to three external 4K displays, the Dell D6000 Universal Docking Station is the ultimate notebook docking station for multitasking and productivity. Don’t you have a USB-C laptop yet? Don’t worry about it. This docking station supports two 4k monitors via the USB 3.0 port, making it compatible with almost any notebook.

You want to add ports to your Ultrabook Ctype

If you want more ports on your Dell XPS or MacBook Pro, the Dell D6000 offers 11 ports, including four USB 3.0 ports. It’s the perfect way to deal with the compromises that come with the latest thin and lightweight laptops.

Charge your laptop at the same time on

The Dell D6000 can simultaneously charge a 65W laptop, creating a clean, uncluttered workspace. Make sure that the USB-C port of your laptop is powered.

Don’t buy if… 1Б9.

You want to edit photos and videos or play games

Although the D6000 allows you to use up to three external displays, it is not suitable for gaming, editing or other complex tasks. This is because DisplayLink is based on the CPU and each intensive graphic work increases the load on the CPU.

Judgment

The Dell D6000 Universal Dock is an excellent USB-C docking station that extends the versatility of your C-type or USB 3.0 notebook. Adding extra ports and running multiple monitors from a single cable on a laptop is great. But this docking station is even better because it can also work via a USB 3.0 host port.

There is currently no better alternative on the market. The plug is tempting because it comes with a removable USB-C cable, but the fact that I can’t get 60Hz at 4k from the HDMI port is a disadvantage for me. In addition, the D6000 is more powerful and its sleek design is suitable for the office.
