Read the Dell XPS 8940 review and check out the price. If you knew how handy the Dell XPS 8930 was, you’ll probably love the XPS 8940, which offers similar utility, but in a new package and with additional features.

The XPS line was never meant to be as powerful as the Aurora, but it has a lot of potential, which is noticeable if you opt for one of the high-end options like this.

One of the areas where the Dell XPS clearly outperforms its rivals is in the number of configurations available.

For example, you can use the lowest 10th generation Core i3s. The latest update offers options up to the 11th generation Core i9.

The same goes for graphics, as there are options for both integrated and discrete GPUs, with the latter going up to RTX 3070.

And while the prices of these higher options may be high compared to the lower options, they are not overpriced to say the least.

Another dedicated desktop version is also available, in an even more attractive white color and with better peripherals than the standard XPS 8940.

None of these displays have bright LEDs, so you have a low setting.

This configurability ensures that the desktop can be used by a large number of users, especially since many people enjoy it.

And you get not only powerful equipment, but also good quality at the same time.

The Dell XPS 8940 has many advantages over any other solution of its kind. While better than the older XPS 8930, both brackets have common drawbacks. But given the general utility of the desktop, it’s a good choice for you if you’re not planning any major upgrades or additions.

Design and construction

The Dell XPS 8940 makes a more subtle statement, unlike the bold gaming desktops with glass panels, RGB fans, etc.

But make no mistake about its treatment, which we will discuss in the next chapter.

You get two color schemes, one comes with the kit and the other is a whitewashed version, referred to as a special edition.

While not unique in themselves, they do stand out from other typical black and white desktops.

The case is small, but Dell has made sure there is enough ventilation for normal and heavy use.

This must be why the bottom half of the front panel is lattice-shaped, while the other half is solid.

Below the power button are a couple of ports, and again the Dell logo is present.

The small size of the chassis also makes it light, but the quality with which it is made could have been better.

It doesn’t look dull when you see it, but when you touch it, it’s clear that the build quality was probably better.

Especially if you choose the high-end option, the build quality seems cheap for the price paid.

Among the many other options of the Dell XPS 8940, this model is equipped with a Core i7-10700 processor, lots of RAM and an integrated graphics card.

The processor is an 8-core, 16-threaded variant of Intel that can reach 4.8GHz with factory overclocking, which is enough for demanding tasks.

Manual overclocking is not supported by this processor, although you can buy other variants with processors ending in K.

While they can be overclocked, the Dell XPS 8940 is not the ideal machine for this.

This is partly due to the design, and they just don’t have enough cooling to handle the high temperatures the processor can reach.

However, this does not mean that it is not effective under normal circumstances. In addition, the worktable produces no noise, even under load.

The option does not have its own GPU, although it can be added if needed if it is small enough and in the GPU power range of 500W.

Since this is not a standard unit, you cannot replace the power supply, which means aftermarket GPU add-ons are somewhat limited.

However, Dell offers several GPU options ranging from mid-range to high-end graphics cards that you can install on your desktop if you buy one.

It is clear that this desktop option is designed for processor intensive activities, such as running various software programs, multitasking throughout the day, number crunching, etc.

Add the GPU, and you can also use it for gaming if you manage to put an extra fan or two in the case.

The Dell XPS 8940 can also be configured for graphical tasks if desired, making it very convenient.

There are options for both Windows 10 Home and Pro, with the former installed in this version.

Memory and RAM

For primary storage, you get a 1TB hard drive, but don’t be alarmed, because you can add an M.2 SSD.

However, there is only one M.2 SSD slot, and the system supports up to 2TB of NvME storage, so choose your drive size wisely.

In addition, two 2.5 slots and one free 3.5 slot are available, in which SATA disks with a storage capacity of 2 TB each can also be installed.

The available memory on this one is 64GB, which allows you to do whatever you need because the computer is well equipped for it. This desktop is also available with 16 and 32 GB RAM options.

XPS 8940 has 4 UDIMM slots, each supporting 32 GB modules, giving you up to 128 GB of system memory in total.

The working memory runs at 2933 MHz. Discover the best desktops with an Intel Core i7 processor.

Ports and connections

The XPS 8940 has many assets, but one of them should be praised: the connectivity it offers.

You get everything you need, USB Type-C ports, Type-A ports, audio ports, a card reader, and more, like. B. an Ethernet port and an optical drive.

The other case removes the optical drive, but it supports it.

There are a total of 7 3.1 Gen 1 ports and two USB 2.0 ports, so wired connectivity will never be an issue.

This variant does not have its own graphics card, which means it only has one HDMI and one DisplayPort. Adding a graphics processor allows you to add additional monitors.

For the wireless option, you have Bluetooth and WIFI, but those are not the latest versions.

Additional functions

The accessories on the Dell XPS 8940 aren’t great, but they do the job.

There are no speakers in the box, so you will need to purchase those separately if you need sound in your setup.

Your desktop computer came with a free 12-month subscription to McAfee, which you may or may not renew.

This appliance also comes with a 2-year guarantee.

What do users think of the Dell XPS 8940?

Like its predecessor, the Dell XPS 8930, the Dell XPS 8940 is also very popular with users.

One reason for this is the wide variety of configurations in which this desk is available. This means that everyone from students to professionals, office users, gamers and content creators have found uses for this desktop in their daily lives.

Desktops start at junior models and run all the way up to Core i9, and even the latest 11th generation Intel processors. Generation are available.

Therefore, reliable operation when needed is never a problem for the machine.

Users have noted that in addition to the usual built-in options, there are also discrete graphics options, meaning that the XPS 8940 can handle not only CPU processing, but also graphics processing and heavy rendering.

The high-end capabilities of the RTX GPUs prove it. Refer to the Dell XPS 8940 manual.

And it’s not just the hardware, the desktop also has excellent connectivity, which customers rave about.

There’s no shortage of ports, and they’re neatly distributed across the front and back. This, along with the optional WIFI 6, has made it even more user-friendly.

With so many good things, there are also bad things to report.

The compact size of the case is certainly a strong selling point, but ultimately it caused some problems when installing larger GPUs.

You may be able to buy a powerful desktop computer, but the expansion and upgrade options are limited.

For example, there is only one PCIe slot for M.2 SSDs, the proprietary power supply cannot be replaced with an aftermarket power supply, etc.

The other drawbacks are minor, but one of them is the build quality of the desk.

Not that it’s flimsy, but for the price it’s offered for, which is more than the options above, users expected better.

It stood out more because there are cases you can buy separately that are of better quality than this, and they don’t cost much either.

Other expert advice

The experts at PC Gamer found the Dell XPS 8940 to be a very usable desktop computer that can be used for both work and play. It’s compact, doesn’t produce disturbing noise or heat, and much more. However, they would have preferred the price of some of the higher end options to be slightly lower than it actually is.
