Industrial FE models add functional safety with SIL2 support

Earlier this month Eurotech announced a pair of COM-HPC CPU-180 modules with the 11th Gen Tiger Lake Core GRE, including the CPU-180-02, which uses the functional safety features (FuSa) of the Tiger Lake GRE. The company has now developed two COM Express Compact Type 6 modules based on the 10nm equivalent of the Intel Atom x6000E (Elkhart Lake), including the CPU-161-20 module, which adds FuSa functionality similar to that offered by the Atom x6000FE option. This is the first product we have seen that supports FE models.

A CPU-161-20 module with the Elhart Lake RE variants is connected ready for operation to the FuSa CPU-161-20. RE parts have been used in several embedded products, including the compact TQMxE40C1 and TQMxE40C2 Type 6 modules.

Like the FE components, the RE models support Intel’s TCC and similar synchronised TSN functions, which according to Eurotech support real-time software applications. They do not have the FuSa characteristics of FE, which Intel Safety Island calls, and meet the requirements of IEC 61508-2:2010 (SIL2) and ISO 13849-1 Cat 3 PL = d.

The FuSa technology offers an integrated, independent and specialised core that controls the critical semi-closed workload, says Eurotech. Not to be confused with the Intel PSE Cortex-M7 kernel, which is available on all Elkhart Lake models and offers network proxy, integrated controller and remote sensor hub functionality, as well as Out-of-Band (OOB) and In-Band (INB) device management.

The CPU-161-20 model with the four-core Atom x6427FE can carry out critical and non-critical workloads simultaneously thanks to the hypervisor separation of FuSa and non-FuSa environments, according to Eurotech. Another CPU-161-20 uses a dual-core Atom x6200FE, which controls a low 4.5 W PDT by skipping graphics.

Although there are only two product names, Eurotech offers four main functional configurations, some of which offer different processor options:

  • CPU-161-19 01, 02, 03 – RE (TCC/TSN) – 2.5GbE Control
  • CPU-161-19 21, 22, 23 – RE (TCC/TSN) – adds the key, ADC, and twice as much 2.5GbE and more CAN, UART, and GPIO.
  • CPU-161-20 21 – FE (TCC/TSN, FuSa) – headless, 1 GHz, dual-core, 4.5 W Atom x6200FE with more advanced features such as CPU-161-19 21, 21, 23 plus PCIe
  • CPU-161-20 22 – FE (TCC/TSN, FuSa) – same as model 21, but with 1.9 GHz, quad-core processor, 12 W Atom x6427FE; adds display signals

Eurotech supports Compact Type 6 95 x 95 mm modules with the Linux Everyware distribution based on Yocto and standard Linux, Windows 10 IoT Enterprise and untitled RTOS. The modules also support the Eurotech Everyware Software Framework (ESF), a commercial version of Eclipse Kura tailor-made for companies, and open source Java/OSGi middleware for IoT gateways.

KPP-161-19

The three lower CPU variants 01/02/03 CPU-161-19 offer the same RE processors as the three upper 21/22/23 models: Dual core, 1.2 GHz Atom x6212RE and four core, 1.5 GHz Atom x6414RE and 1.9 GHz Atom x6425RE. These stock management units operate with a TDP power of 6 W, 9 W and 12 W respectively, in both the economic and high-end models. They also deliver up to 4 GB, 8 GB or 16 GB DDR4-3200. The RAM is welded to the module, allowing IBECC band error correction.

Standard equipment includes 2x SATA 3.0, integrated SPI flash memory, SDXC factory option, 2x USB 3.0, 8x USB 2.0, LPC and SMBus. They all offer 2x DDI (HDMI/DVI/DP++) up to 4Kp60 plus LVDS or the factory EDP option. You can also add an optional VGA interface at the factory. Audio and HDA speaker interfaces are standard.

Three high-level models add the factory option for 2 additional 2.5GbE SGMII ports to the standard 2.5GbE controller via proprietary extensions (not COM Express) for 3x 2.5GbE in general. These 21/22/23 models also include a sensor controller, 6x ADC and 2x quadrature encoder interfaces that can be used for applications such as camera control.

In the 21/22/23 higher level models more serial ports have been added – 3x 2-wire UART and 5x 4-wire UART compared to 2x TX/RX UART, and more GPIOs. While the lower models offer 4x GPI and 4x GPO, the 21/22/23 models offer configurations with 5x GPI, 4x GPO and 3x GPIO. You also get 2x I2C and 3x SPI instead of a single helper and 2x CAN-FD instead of a single factory CAN-FD option.

All CPU-161-19 models are equipped with RTC, watchdog timer, TPM 2.0 and temperature sensors. The 12V modules operate at temperatures between -40 and 85°C with a humidity resistance of 5 to 90% relative humidity.

CPU-161-20

The FuSa compatible CPU-161-20 comes with 4 GB RAM for the headless Atom x6200FE (model 21) and 16 GB RAM for the headless Atom x6427FE (22), again with the soldered DDR4-3200 with IBECC support. In addition to the missing display ports, the 21st and 22nd ports have the following features Model with the same features as the more powerful CPU-161-19 21/22/23 SKU processors.

The CPU-161-20 has added PCIe interfaces that are not listed for the CPU-161-19. However, PCIe is not available if you add two 2.5GbE SGMII options. The PCIe range is represented by both 1x PCIe x4 Gen3 (or 2x PCIe x2 Gen3 or 4x PCIe x1 Gen3) and 2x PCIe x1 Gen3.

The CPU-161-20 complies with safety standards EN 62368 and UL 60950 in addition to the standards mentioned above. Customization services are available for all Eurotech Elhart Lake modules.
