The operating system of the Raspberry Pi is installed in English by default. If, like me, it is not your native language, you can easily change it and use another language.
In this tutorial, I will show you different methods to do that.

To change the language on the Raspberry Pi OS desktop, go to the main menu and then to Raspberry Pi Settings and Configuration. On the Location tab, click Set Location and select Language and Country.

But it is not the only solution, and I will tell you more about it in the next issue. Read on to find out all about it.

By the way, if you are just starting out with the raspberry Pi, I can help you learn it a lot faster. My Raspberry Pi download course will help you discover step by step the Raspberry Pi device and its secrets. In just a few hours, you’ll be ready to start working on an interesting project.

Changing the language in the office

As I just explained, the first way to set the language in Raspberry Pi OS is to do it from the desktop if you have one installed.

Here you can see how to do this through the configuration tool :

  • Open the main menu (top left)
  • Go to the Settings > Pi Raspberry Settings menu.
    Error: The file name is not specified. ” alt=”” width=”516″ height=”262″ data-ezsrc=”http://server.digimetriq.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/02/How-to-Change-the-Language-on-Raspberry-Pi-OS–.jpg-.jpg” data-ez=”” />
  • Then click on the “Location” tab.
    Error: The file name is not specified. ” alt=”” width=”476″ height=”467″ data-ezsrc=”http://server.digimetriq.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/02/1613208555_890_How-to-Change-the-Language-on-Raspberry-Pi-OS–.jpg-.jpg” data-ez=”” />
  • Click on “Set Location…”.
    Error: The file name is not specified. ” alt=”” width=”374″ height=”190″ data-ezsrc=”http://server.digimetriq.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/02/1613208555_119_How-to-Change-the-Language-on-Raspberry-Pi-OS–.jpg-.jpg” data-ez=”” />
  • In this window you can make the settings:
    • System language (formerly: French)
    • Countries: Most languages show slight differences between countries (e.g. France, Belgium, Canada…).
    • Character set: character set to be used, keep the default value if unsure
  • When the selection is complete, press “OK” to apply the changes.

A restart is required to apply the new language, after which everything should be fine.
Note that not all or even some of the tools are translated into all languages.
I know that even if I install my system in French, there are always some sentences or whole tools in English. Error! Filename not specified.” alt=”” width=”639″ height=”82″ data-ezsrc=”http://server.digimetriq.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/02/1613208556_654_How-to-Change-the-Language-on-Raspberry-Pi-OS–.jpg-.jpg” data-ez=”” />

But it should still be easier for you than the default language.
By the way, you can change the keyboard layout and Wi-Fi country in this configuration tool if needed.

Changing the language via the terminal

Of course, if you are not on the Raspberry Pi OS desktop, none of this is possible. But there is another tool that can help you: raspi-config.

Raspi-config is a very useful tool made for Raspberry Pi OS to configure everything on the command line, including the system language.

Configuration grazing

How to use it:

  • Start the raspi configuration with the command :
    sudo
raspi-config By default, the system is configured to use an American QWERTY layout. If you are using a different keyboard, here is an image that may help you:
    Error: The file name is not specified. ” alt=”” width=”800″ height=”267″ data-ezsrc=”http://server.digimetriq.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/02/1613208556_641_How-to-Change-the-Language-on-Raspberry-Pi-OS–.jpg-.jpg” data-ez=” /> Find a key in
this layout and type it on your keyboard (for example, “A” is the first letter of the second line, even if you are using an AZERTY keyboard).
  • Go to the “Location options” section. (5).
    Error: The file name is not specified. ” alt=”” width=”791″ height=”274″ data-ezsrc=”http://server.digimetriq.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/02/1613208557_824_How-to-Change-the-Language-on-Raspberry-Pi-OS–.jpg-.jpg” data-ez=”” />
  • Then click on “Local” (L1).
    Error: The file name is not specified. ” alt=”” width=”764″ height=”163″ data-ezsrc=”http://server.digimetriq.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/02/1613208558_306_How-to-Change-the-Language-on-Raspberry-Pi-OS–.jpg-.jpg” data-ez=”” />
  • You can now select the desired locations :
    Error! File name not specified. ” alt=”” width=”1200″ height=”651″ data-ezsrc=”http://server.digimetriq.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/02/1613208559_306_How-to-Change-the-Language-on-Raspberry-Pi-OS–.jpg-.jpg” data-ez=”” />
  • Scroll through the list with the arrow keys and press “Space” to select a line.
Then press “Enter” to make changes.
  • The program now asks you to select your system’s default locale:
    Error: The file name was not specified. “alt=”” width=”1200″ height=”354″ data-ezsrc=”http://server.digimetriq.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/02/1613208559_235_How-to-Change-the-Language-on-Raspberry-Pi-OS–.jpg-.jpg” data-ez=” />
Select again with the arrow key and confirm with “Enter”.
  • The command is executed and the Raspi configuration menu is displayed again.
You can now use this tool (press “Esc”).

Your system is now configured to use the language you just selected.

Dpkg

As I mentioned earlier, Raspi-config is a tool developed by the Raspberry Pi Foundation that helps you configure your system from the command line.
But basically, there are always Linux commands to do the same thing.

Do you want to learn a new commandment today? Here it is 🙂 .

To open the last window of the previous operation directly, just enter this command:
sudo dpkg-reconfigure locales

From there you can choose your language, then the default language, and you’re done.
It’s slightly faster and can be useful if you change it after each new installation. Also, it works on any Debian-like system, not just the Raspberry Pi OS (e.g. Ubuntu, Twister OS, DietPi, etc.).

If you have any other questions or concerns about these methods, please feel free to leave a comment below and I will do my best to help you.

Frequently asked questions

How do I change the operating system of my Raspberry Pi?

Start the Raspberry Pi and once a red image appears on the GUI screen, press and hold the Shift key for 2 seconds. Select the currently installed operating system and highlight the desired operating system. Select the desired language and keyboard at the bottom of the screen. Press Set (i) at the top left of the NOOBS field.

Raspbian comes pre-installed with Python, the official programming language of Raspberry Pi and IDLE 3, an integrated Python development environment. We will now show you how to get started with IDLE and write your first, albeit simple, program in Python.

How do I reset my Raspberry Pi operating system at the factory?

You can easily reset or “wipe” the purple tube. This can be considered a “reset”. If you are using the NOOBS, you can hold down the [SHIFT] key during a reboot to start the NOOBS recovery system. This allows you to reset everything to “factory settings”.
