If you’re reading this article, one of two things must be true: 1) You’ve decided to buy a PlayStation 5, a gaming console with a much more detailed, interactive and impressive HDR experience. 2) You’re starting to experience the limitations of the internal storage you’ve got installed in your PS5.

As time passes, PS5 will have more and more issues with internal storage. The more we use the PS5, the more we will need more space. There is a way to gain more space on the PS5, but you have to use a little hack to do that.

If you’ve already got a PS5, then you already know how you can extend the internal storage. But if you’ve got a PS5 that you’re thinking about buying but don’t know how to expand the internal storage, then you’ve come to the right place. In this article, I will show you how you can do just that.

If you are a gamer who plays a lot of games, you may need to increase the amount of storage space on your PS5. The Sony PlayStation 5 system comes with around 825 GB of Solid State Drive (SSD) space at launch. You can now store more games in the storage supplied, but keep in mind that due to the PS5 OS’s requirement for space, you can only use roughly 667GB of it.

So, if you’re worried about your PS5 gaming console’s in-built SSD storage being too little or insufficient, don’t be. By adding a compatible internal M.2 SSD, you may simply upgrade and expand your storage.

What is an M.2 solid-state drive (SSD)?

With an M.2 SSD storage device, PS5 beta users can increase the internal capacity allocation of their PS5 console or PS5 Digital Edition. Gamers may add and play PS4 and PS5 games, as well as media apps, on their system. You can transfer your games from the primary storage of your console to the M.2 SSD storage.

PS5 M2 SSD Drive System Requirements

The capacity of your M.2 SSD must be between 250GB and 4TB. PCIe Gen4 x4 M.2 NVMe SSD with a sequential read speed of 5,500MB/s or better is the interface. The module width is 22mm, and the socket type is 5,500MB/s or faster. 30mm, 42mm, 60mm, 80mm, or 110mm with a height of less than 11.25mm are compatible with the PS5 console, including both the SSD and its cooling structure.

Please note that the SSD expansion feature is only available to PS5 beta users. You must have received a beta invitation or be currently enrolled in the beta testing system in order to participate.

  • Start by going to the Settings menu.
  • Choose a system.
  • Go to the System Software section.
  • Select Console Information from the menu.

You’ll now need to unplug and turn off your PS5. To turn off your PS5, press and hold the Power button for three seconds. Unplug all cords and wait a few minutes for it to cool down. Do not attempt to install your M2 SSD drive until your PS5 has cooled down.

  • On a level surface, prepare a soft cloth.
  • Place your PS5 on top of it, disk drive facing up.
  • Remove the base cover from the table.
  • Hold the base cover’s top corner. Lift it up and gently slide it towards you or the base.
  • The long rectangular cover with a screw will be seen. It’s where you’ll put your SSD storage device.
  • Carefully unscrew it and remove the cover.
  • Remove the screw and adjust the spacer to your M.2 SSD’s size.
  • Insert your M2 SSD into the slot. Make sure it’s lined up with the expansion connector’s notch. It can be placed diagonally upward.
