Sometimes you may find that the Windows 10 computer starts so slow and all this, opening an application or performing a task, takes a lot of time. Few users report that installing the latest Windows 10 updates seriously affects the PC speed, Windows 10 computer crashes or starts up slower after a recent Windows update. There are several reasons why Windows 10 is very slow and unresponsive after the update. The update may have corrupted some system files, viruses or malware infections, hardware conflicts and outdated drivers, causing too many programs to run in the background, and so on.

Whatever the cause of the problem, here are some simple tips to restore performance and speed up Windows 10 on older computers.

Professional advice : If you are still using an old mechanical hard drive, upgrading to an SSD is the most effective way to speed up your device.

How to speed up Windows 10

Microsoft regularly releases updates for Windows with the latest patches that fix the latest bugs in the operating system. So let’s start by checking if Microsoft has found a solution to the problem that slowed down Windows 10 after the update.

  • Open the settings with the Windows + I key,
  • Click on Windows Update and update the security,
  • Then click the Check for Updates button to download and install the latest Windows update from the Microsoft server (if available).
  • You will then need to restart the computer to apply the updates.

Again, we recommend running a full system scan with the latest updated antivirus/anti-virus software, which will be helpful in case of a virus infection of the malware causing the problem. If you cannot run a system scan because your computer is too slow, we recommend that you start Windows Safe Mode and run a working process.

You can also run the built-in antivirus program from Start > Settings > Update and Security > Windows Security and then click Open Windows Security in the right pane. Click the Virus and Threat Protection button, then click the Quick Scan button and wait for the scan to complete.

Repair Corrupt WindowsSystem Files

When Windows 10 crashes, your PC experiences driver errors, blue or black screens and other problems related to corrupted Windows system files. Windows 10 comes with two important tools, the Deployment Image Service and Management Tool (DISM) and the System File Checker (SFC), which can repair a corrupted system image and restore missing corrupt Windows system files immediately.

  • Open a command prompt as administrator,
  • Type DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth and press Enter,
  • DISM attempts to repair damaged system files via Windows Update, so access to the Internet is required.
  • When the scan is complete, run the sfc /scannow command to check the system files and press Enter,
  • It scans the system for corrupted system files when a utility is found to restore them with proper data,
  • To complete the scan, simply wait until the computer is back up to 100%.

Driver and software update

For example, outdated drivers or software can also cause your computer to start slowly. Faulty drivers, for example, prevent Windows from working or cause it to start more slowly. Graphics card drivers are updated regularly to fix bugs and improve performance. Updating all outdated drivers and software will likely help speed up your Windows 10 PC.

  • Press Windows + R, type devmgmt.msc and click OK,
  • The Device Manager opens and displays a list of all installed drivers,
  • In this window, right-click on the driver (e.g. display driver) and select the updated driver,
  • Click Automatically check for an updated driver and follow the on-screen instructions to download the latest available driver from the Microsoft server.

Once all the steps are completed, restart your computer and see if the computer problem has slowed down after you corrected the Windows update.

Disable programs at startup.

In most cases, these are third-party programs that cause your computer to run slowly on Windows 10. We recommend that you check and disable heavy processes, i.e. programs that you rarely or never use.

Learn how to prevent programs from running at startup.

  • Right-click on the taskbar and select Task Manager or press Ctrl-Shift-Esc to launch Task Manager.
  • Click the Start tab and sort the processes based on their impact on startup.
  • Then select to deactivate processes in the higher category.
  • Right-click on the process and select Unmount.

Remember, you are not disabling the program, but it is working at startup.

Make sure that Quick Startis enabled.

In the latest version of Windows 10, Microsoft has added a hybrid startup and shutdown feature that puts the computer into sleep mode and improves startup and shutdown. To solve the problem of very slow Windows 10 startup, install and enable the Quick Start option as follows.

  • Open the control panel,
  • Select System and Security, and then select Power Options.
  • Press the Select button on the left panel, which is identical to the power button.
  • In the pop-up window, click Change settings not currently available.
  • Select the Enable quick start (recommended) check box and save the changes.

Configure the amount of virtual memory used in Windows

Another quick fix for slow PCs is to let Windows use more virtual memory. Simply change the file manager settings on the default page in Windows 10 from System Manager to Manual. It is a simple and effective way to improve PC performance.

  • Run a performance search and click Customize Windows appearance and performance in the results.
  • Click the Advanced tab, and then click the Edit button in the Virtual Memory section,
  • Uncheck the option to automatically manage the file size of all disks.
  • Now select the C: Default drive where Windows 10 is installed and select Custom Size.
  • Then change the startup size and the maximum size to the values recommended by Windows 10 (see below).
  • Now click Set and then click OK to save the settings.
  • Restart your computer for the changes to take effect and resolve the slow performance issue of Windows 10.

Disable indexing of the search

Windows 10 indexes your hard drive in the background, so you can search your computer faster than if it weren’t indexed. However, slower computers that use indexing may experience performance degradation, and you can give them a boost by disabling indexing.

  • Type services.msc into the Windows 10 search box and press Enter.
  • The Services application appears. Scroll to Indexing Service or Windows Search.
  • Double-click it and on the screen that appears, change the Startup Type to Disabled and click Stop, then restart the device.
  • Your searches may be slightly slower, although you may not notice the difference. But you should get an overall increase in performance.

Hardware upgrade

If you still need help, it’s time to think about upgrading your equipment, for example :

  • Upgrading your graphics card is a great way to speed up your games,
  • If you have a small amount of RAM, the processor will process a limited number of tasks faster. But if you have a large amount of RAM, your processor will process more tasks faster. So adding an extra drum makes your computer faster.
  • Again, a solid-state hard disk drive (SSD) is the best way to improve the performance of many older PCs and laptops.

That’s it, and I hope you now make your Windows 10 PC faster than before.
